I just got the baseline MacBook Pro 2012 13 inch. I want to upgrade the ram to 8gb and was wondering what type to use. Also, if I change the ram, is the computer more susceptible to failure in the future? But anyways what are the best brands? I know it has to be 1600 something. I was looking at vengeance 2x4gb and it was 77 bucks but then crucial was like 60. What's the difference?

Go to Crucial.com and use their Memory selector. Then buy what that comes up with.
If you have the MacBook Pro 9,2 (use System Profiler to see) then your machine is capable of having 16GB of RAM.

RAM modules come in 4GB and 8GB sticks, you have 2 slots. So 2 x 8GB = 16GB which is what I advise you install.
Apple only installs 8GB, but if you do it yourself or have a local PC/Mac tech do it, then it can be 16GB.
I agree Crucial.com or OtherWorld Computing are the best sources of Mac RAM as they test it and make sure your not getting bad or PC RAM that can have slightly different specs, but appear to be the same.
Go whole hog and up the ante to 16GB! You won't regret it.
And as for the brand, CORSAIR FTW!!!
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial. 8 GB is probably enough, but if the bank account allows, 16 GB will not hurt.
