Cannot "su" in terminal

Isn't the "su" (i.e. root) the same as setting the master password? I have done this and double checked I've got it right TWICE and I cannot su.

Bills-MacBook-Air:~ Bill$ su

Password:

su: Sorry

Bills-MacBook-Air:~ Bill$

What is going on here? My main user password also does not work to su.

iPhone 5, iOS 6

BTW: sudo works with my user password but not the "master password"

Does "su" work with the master password? As far as I know, "su" only works with the root password if you have the root user enabled.

"sudo" allows you to get administrator permissions in Terminal, so it's normal that it only works with your user password
