I hear a tick, or short hiss for a sound effect periodically

For some reason about every five-ten minutes I hear a quick tick/short hiss in the background noise. It reminds me of a messager type notification going off alerting me of a new message. I DO NOT have anything running in the background. I don't know what's going on. Any suggestions?

You can isolate the issue further by attempting one of these steps:


A) You can open your Notification Center preferences (System Preferences) and view which applications are set to have notification sounds. It is good to note that some applications do not need to be open for notifications to come through.

B) You can isolate the issue by creating a new user account, then test to see if the issue persists:
