jpeg export- why do some become tiff-Mb files

Took 10 pictures in RAW. Minor editing in Aperture 3. Uploaded to Sam's Photo for 4x6 prints. 8 went as jpeg (small file), but 2 went a tiff (25mg). These 2 took a long time to upload. What did I do wrong and how can I prevent this tiff (large files) in the future?

You selected Tiff when you exported those images.

Be aware that the export presets can be edited so that what the preset does is in no way related to the name of the preset. That is a preset labeled jpg could still export as Tiff. Check the preset settings before exporting and if you do edit the presets make sure you create a new preset to hold your changes and give it an appropriate name.

Frank - everything is set correctly for JPEG export. I reset it just to be sure. I went back through a lot of old NON-exported photos. Every now and then I would find a TIFF that was supposed to be either RAW or JPEG. Is somehting happening during Aperture 3 editing that could cause this conversion to TIFF? But, even if something is happening during editing - they should sill export as a JPEG. Your thoughts - please. Bob

So you are finding some Tiff files in your Aperture library? Are your originals managed or referenced? (That is stored in the library or external to the library)

Aperture itself wouldn't be converting to Tiff but if you were using an external editor or plugin that could be returning a Tiff file to Aperture. But as you said (and as I just confirmed) if the File Type in the export preset is set to JPG then even a Tiff would be exported as JPG.

In my last post I asked if you had exported all 8 images in one batch or if you did them separately or in sub-groups, could you let me know how the export was done, it would help in figuring this out.

Are the images that were exported as Tiff also Tiff in the library? If you go back and export one of the inages that was exported as Tiff and export it again (making sure the preset File Type is really JPG) does it then export correctly?

I suppose it would be a good idea, just to eliminate anything strand in the library, for you to run a library repair. Hold the command and option (alt) keys down while starting Aperture. Select Repair library in the window that opens.

I do move some photos to OnOne or PS (for editing), then back to Aperture. In Aperture I would select-all (click) the photos I wanted to send to Sam's for printing then drag the selected items (all at the same time) onto the Sam's web site for processing/priniting. Another thought - on occassion I would have to switch-out flash-cards during shooting.

Ah there you go both pieces of the puzzle solved.

You're getting the Tiff files in Aperture from the use of the external editor. In the Aperture->Preferences->Export window is the settings for what file type to use with an external editor I'm sure your setting is Tiff.

And then by dragging the file out of Aperture rather then exporting it you are getting the Tiff.

IMPORTANT Point:

By dragging the files out of Aperture you are not really exporting them you are getting the Aperture generated preview (or in the case of the Tiff files the original). The settings in the Export window have NO effect on the image when you drag it out. In all likelihood you are not getting the size and/or resolution you think you are.

You should be exporting the versions by using the Export Versions button in the Export window. Once the versions are exported to a folder on your disk you can then drag those to the print web site. This will ensure you are getting the image size and resolution you want.

You wrote that you selected the images and dragged them to the SAMs website. This indicates that you did not export them.

As for the external editor setting tiff is fine you just need to be exporting the versions rather then dragging them out.

Again as I wrote by dragging the images out of Apertuee you are bypassing the export function and not getting the image quality you really want. By doing this you are short changing yourself.

Good luck
