mini dvi to hdmi , mac to TV no sound

Hi, Just got my MINI Displayport to HDMI cable, so I can connect my Macbook (white) to my Panasonic. Got the picture thru alright, but the sound is not working. The cable supposedly should transfer both picture and sound. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

MacBook (13-inch Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

When you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. But check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.

With the Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

Good point.

Use external speakers as a workaround if you use the method I suggested. It is highly unlikely your HDMI input source has corresponding audio input jacks...it wouldn't make any sense.

I had this same problem: Connecting my 2008 Macbook to my Panasonic with a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter gave me a great picture but no sound.

I was expecting this when I bought the adapter. But I was also expecting -- well, hoping -- that the RCA cables would give me sound. They did -- but only if I switched the Input to AV/Component, which, of course, eliminated the picture.

I found a solution in which the person connected cables from her Mac to an RGB/DVI Audio In port on her TV.

My TV has no such port. And I'm guessing yours doesn't either.

Realizing the answer had to come on the TV end, I Googled until I found a service manual for my particular plasma set. The solution couldn't be simpler.

Go to your TV's Menu < Sound < HDMI input < HDMI 1 in (or whichever port you're using to connect your Macbook), then switch it from Digital to Analog.

That's it. I get a great picture and sound.
