Microsoft mpeg-4 v1 video import into FCP

Hey guys,

Help me out, i've been chasing my tail all day with this portable dvr!

little spycam records video as mpeg4-v1 I need to be able to cut it up and burn it to dvd. I havnt found a solution in mac or PC that allows me to work with this file format!
... please please please help!
I can get the video to play but nothing else.
I have a analog to digital converter and the AV/OUT on this player doesn't, for some strange and magical reason, work with my ADS pyro vlink firewire analog converter using command-8.

MPEG4 is (as they say in the airline business) a 'final destination' format - that is - it is designed for delivery, not editing. Audio and video are muxed (mixed) into a transport stream. FCP does not decode them and will only play the video - it does not attempt to deal with the audio.

In order to work with files of this type, you need to decode them into a quicktime compatable format. there is program called 'mpeg streamclip' that will do this. It is free and can be found on versiontracker.

Once the file is converted, into a DV-NTSC (or DV-PAL) format, you should have few problems.

An alternative is to simply play the file out from the camera as analog using the cable, bring it into your Analog/DV converter and bring the file in using 'non-controllable device' as your firewire protocol. If your current A/DV conversion device does not work, see if you can borrow a more conventional DV camera to use as the A/DV conversion device.

good luck.

This is not an FCP problem at all.
If you research MPEG4 you will find there is no standard. There was supposed to be a standard but Microsoft refused to cooperate.

Your only choice is to obtain the proprietary playback system for these spycams your client is using. Your clients should have researched their tools more thoroughly before investing in them. Find the mfr, get the device, or find out if you can change the recording format.

yeah... the most annoying thing about the whole situation is that no major mfg's create these devices... So all the devices are made by some random named mfg company ... no support is availiable in the states for such devices.
Sony hasnt jumped into the spycamera market just yet !! 😀

Well the best part about it... My client wont have much of a choice for digital video editing 😀
