Can't open a pages document

I've tried duplicating it and exporting it as a word file. This brings up the question of how to backup what's in a high cloud without having to export each document individually. Because now I cannot trust iCloud.

Pages files that are stored in iCloud are also saved locally, back them up with Time Machine.

Whilst it won't help you recover documents that have already become corrupt, can I suggest you get into the habit of backing up your documents in the cloud regularly.
