    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

First, note that only Mid 2010 and newer Mac minis support 16 GB of RAM. If you have one of those Mac minis, you can buy RAM at OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/

You may think that any RAM that meets the requirements of your Mac mini will work, but there are some brands that sell memory which isn't compatible with Macs. For example, Kingston's Value memory. That's the reason why I recommend you to buy RAM at OWC or Crucial.

Follow these steps to install more memory on the Mac mini > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4432

If you are thinking PC upgrades and having to change BIOS, no, with the Mac there's nothing like that. Buy the correct RAM, install it properly, and the computer immediately recognizes it. I always immediately go to About This Mac... after I've installed the RAM to make sure it appears. Hint: if you don't hear and/or feel a snap when you insert the RAM, it didn't seat.
