Select him from the contacts, Go to the Buddy menu and choose "Block Person"

If he is still listed as a Buddy choose Remove Buddy, then Block Person.

The iMessages service does not tell people if you are On line or not.

It in fact stores iMessages for a Period and then "syncs" them to the relevant device if all your devices are Off line.

You can't tell is someone else in On line or using the same name.

There is one generic message about the ID or number you are trying not being registered.

I have found no way to block a Contact (as opposed to a Buddy)

Also the app does not need the person to be a Contact. They just have to know how to get hold of you.

Tell the police and change your iPhone number.

Reporting unwanted messages sent from iMessage

I would love to know if you figured out the way to handle this. Unfortunately I have the same situation; I was able to block the imessages on my phone but not on my MacBook or iMac. I need peace from this and would love to know how to do this. thank you

This really needs to be fixed...

Blocking people from iMessage should actually block them, not just move all their contact from my phone to my laptop.

With iOS 7 that has come out since this thread started the option to Block someone on your iPhone has been possible.

It can be set for the Phone app itself, the Messages and Mail apps as well.

In Settings > Messages scroll to the Bottom.

Add the Blocked person.

You can also then look at the blocked person and see what they are blocked for.

This info seems to be stored against their Contacts entry.

What does not happen, even if you use iCloud to Sync to your Mac, is the info rriviong on the Mac to Block the same person.

I have not seen it removing people from the Contacts app on the Mac itself.

There is a problem:

I've blocked a contact on my phone!

They are not blocked on my macbook in the Messages app.

Blocking that contact is greyed out on the mac

Apple NEEDS to fix this.

I do seem to have misunderstood.

I know that the Mac version does not block.

I have been looking at the Contacts app on the Mac after Blocking someone on my iPhone and expecting to see the results on the Mac (allowing some time to sync)

I now get the impression you are looking somewhere in the Messages app ?

I have tried typing the supposedly blocked person's name into the "To" spot and Messages will show their iMessages Contact info.

Is this where you meant ?

It seems if you use the New Messages icon and then the Blue + icon and then the Contacts listing this still shows the "blocked" person.

I also understand it is something that Apple said was coming without being specific about when.

I don't know what you are looking for, there is no indication someone is blocked on either.

They are still a contact and that's fine.

I'm not looking in the messages app, I am recieving messages from a blocked contact on the mac.
Blocking in iMessage seems to be iPhone only..

That's stupid and defeats the purpose of blocking a person.

I no longer want to recieve any communication from them, but I am on the mac.

Sarah915 and I are experiencing the same issue, I signed up to draw more of apple's attention to it.

I don't want to stop using messages on my mac, but I cannot stop recieving unwanted messages!

This is a flaw in iMessage and needs to be addressed by their software engineers in a patch, server side or with an update to Messages.app

That particular feedback page has never been brilliant on keeping up with the iChat versions (there also used to be an issue at OS updates until the page was put on list).

The last version of iChat it lists is iChat (missing out on iChat 6, Messages 7 and 7.0.1 and Messages 8 not to mention the Beta).

Apple provides Hosts to maintain the Boards.

Most of that relies on people with Level 2 or above reporting issues.

In some cases Level 6 posters can report what they feel are New Technical Issues to the Hosts directly in the Lounge area that they can access on achieving Level 6.

mackedee, I am having the same issue as you and sarah915. Blocking a contact on my phone was very simple. But the issue is when I get on my imac, this contact is still able to send me messages thru the Messages app on my computer. Like you, when I select the Buddies tab, the option of Block Person... is gray and I can not select it. I've browsed around and it seems like there is no way to block this person from sending me messages, which is a major flaw. Like you, I would like to not receive messages or be contacted by this person, but its not to the extent that I need to call the police or go through the hassle of changing my phone number and email addresses...

Ralph, I appreciate your insight in this matter, but after reading through this thread a few times, I have no idea what you are talking about, and think you are overcomplicating the matter. All we are looking for is a way to block a person on Message for a mac.

Can anyone give a definitive answer to this question... Is it possible to block a contact in Messages for a Mac?

For now I will log out of Messages for my Mac, and not use it because I don't want this one person to contact me... that is dumb because I like the app and find it convienent but it seems like that is the only way to not receive messages.

Messages is iChat with the iMessages account thrown in and an interface change.

This menu "Buddies" is from iChat

It refers to those accounts that have Buddy Lists (AIM, Jabber and Yahoo accounts)

Only the AIM Accounts can block People

Here is an Google Buddy List with Buddy highlighted and the Block person still is not dark (usable)

For iMessages, No.

For a Google, Facebook or other Jabber Accounts, No

For an AIM (or AIM Valid Screen Name), Yes

Here is a pick for an Apple ID that is a Valid AIM Screen Names with another AIM account I have logged in highlighted

Now the Buddies Menu > Block item works

If you block someone on the iPhone all the options for FaceTime, phone and iMessages are all blocked.

You can go to Settings > Messages > Blocked or the Phone options and the Blocked list and they will be there as well.

As there is no Buddy List for iMessages and the setting are only on the iPhone (And not on the Server) then the only way the info could be passed to the Mac version is if the Contacts App on both is used to Sync such info.

To Restate another way.

the Messages app can access five different services:-

Bonjour,

AIM,

Jabber,

Yahoo

and iMessages.

Most of the Menu items come for the iChat background and refer to action concerning Buddy Lists (AIM, Jabber, Yahoo and Bonjour.

The Buddies Menu only refers to Buddy Lists and in some cases has to have a Buddy highlighted first.

iMessages people are Contacts

You cannot block them on the Mac version.

I have heard that in one piece of Blurb from Apple it was said this feature was coming but it is not mentioned in the current info on Messages (for the Mac)

Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage account > deselect "You can be reached for messages at: your phone number"

Of course this will prevent all messages sent to your phone from appearing on your Mac, but it can be a solution.
