I would like to know if I can do the following.
1. Get an Apple TV
2. Get a tv with a video camera (like the Skype compatible ones)
3. Have a Mac with AirPlay
And with these three things do a google hangout where the tv would act as the screen and also the video and speakers.
Basically I want to use it for video conferencing.
Would this work?
If so is there a specific tv that's good for this? It seems like to good a solution, to easy...

ATV is not a video conferencing device.
It would have no way of connecting to the webcam built in or attached to the tv.
Video chats over the Apple TV work just fine (assuming the network has reasonable bandwidth). We use the TV screen in the kitchen for facetime chats with my youngest son at university, iOS device and AirPlay required (you can't use a webcam)
Okay, thanks for the answers so far. This is where I am confused. I would like the tv to utilize its built in video camera and mic...so that once I push my screen to the tv through the Apple TV the tv effectively takes over the video, audio etc.
Does that make sense...and is it possible?
As already explained, that is not possible.
Will it be possible in the future? Only Apple knows that and they rarely if ever reveal furture plans.
airplay mirror is a 1 way push of what is shown on the device
no commication from the tv goes back so the webcam working is off the table
but you could connect a webcam to the mac my imac works perfectly fine with both it's internal webcam and my old logitech usb webcam can chooses which one I use
with a long cable it could be placed on top of the tv
