Oct 4, 2013 3:47 PM in response to Zankiby MacBabyBee,Zanki, did you call Apple Care first, or just went to the Genius Bar? I'm pretty sure I have the same problem (I also have a mid 2012 MacBook Air that's just out of warranty) - wondering the best way forwards...

Oct 4, 2013 3:51 PM in response to ksatterwhiteby mark1179,My 2012 macbook air toshiba ssd failed also. it was 1 year 1 month old. I just brought it in to applecare today and they confirmed a dead ssd. I am waiting on repair. It ***** that they will use the same toshiba drive to replace it I dont want to have to bring it in again a year from now again. These drives are failing just out of warranty and apple is ignoring the problem.

Oct 4, 2013 6:03 PM in response to ksatterwhiteby Chornox,I have the same issue with my ssd. It died after a 14 and half month of useage. MBA 2012.
Is there someone to contact to fix this issue? I called apple support on the phone and they said they have nothing for this issue yet.

Oct 4, 2013 9:44 PM in response to ksatterwhiteby RomuloA,I feel like we should have all posted our countries from the very beginning of this thread to gain a little more understanding of what's happening. I really feel like some countries have recognized this problem while other countries have yet to see a problem.
I know my phone representative (USA) said he didn't see anything about SSD failures when I asked about 2 weeks ago. Other posters are reporting the same thing still while some posters have been reporting that their Apple stores have indeed put a flag on this issue. This might be misleading to many newcomers to this thread who are in differing geographical location.

Oct 5, 2013 2:10 AM in response to Chornoxby Yorick88,Same problem here with my mid 2012 macbook. after about 1 year and 2 weeks it died...
I hope apple recognises the problem but my first trip to the apple store didnt end well. They wanted to charge ~400 euro. My macbook is 2 weeks out of warranty and the drive breaks down.
The problem is i would take this disccussion to the apple store but i have to travel 3 hours one way which is kind of an investment for: "Were not aware of this, please pay 400 euro". Also I need it to work again for my job so im thinking of replacing the ssd myself. I just have trouble finding the right SSD nearby. Anyone from the netherlands with SDD order/store tips?

Oct 5, 2013 11:45 AM in response to ksatterwhiteby GibberingClaptrap,I was told it might have something to do with the 128 GB Sandforce controller on the toshiba ssds. I was also affected, and I'd like to get an idea of how true (or untrue) this statement is. Can those who have had SSD failures 9-14 months after your purchase let me know whether you:
- A) Had a 128 GB ssd drive
- B) It's a Toshiba drive?

Oct 5, 2013 12:18 PM in response to GibberingClaptrapby Hotur,1) Why would it matter what age it is? Mine failed after 4 months, a more interesting question would be when did it fail? After the update?
2) Everybody in the thread whose has failed is Toshiba

Oct 5, 2013 12:39 PM in response to ShirsenduKby quangdx-asobitech,So after my 128GB Toshiba SSD died on my MacBook Air 11 inch 2012, 1 year and 3 months in to it's life cycle,
I had the part ordered at the Genius Bar, Covent Garden and the cost covered under Applecare extended warranty.
I was told the part was constrained and I would have to wait an estimated 4 weeks.
But to my surprise I got the call earlier this week the part was in, brought my MacBook Air to the store, and had it repaired within 3 days, when I was told expected turn around was currently at 7-10 days.
Well done, Apple Covent Garden, you did well.
Also, I'm happy I took out Applecare as having to argue your case for the cost of repair out of warranty isn't fun at all.
For all those of you that are waiting for the part to arrive, here's my video which includes a temporary solution.

Oct 5, 2013 1:08 PM in response to quangdx-asobitechby tobanai,Mine was repaired at Apple Bluewater.
Yes, they are so fast that i could get my laptop back the day after i left it in.
However, tragedy was that the part replaced was Toshiba SSD again.
Although I was 3 months out of warranty, got it for free and another 90 day extended warranty from now on, it's tragedy indeed. They say it is 'different' Toshiba SSD. But, I'd say it's another time bomb. I couldn't help it but bring it with me cos I was desperate to use it. No more argue.
Please, check which company's product they use it.
Good luck!

Oct 6, 2013 12:43 AM in response to ksatterwhiteby kabosch,Toshiba SSD just died after ~14 months or so in my MacBook Air 13". Does anyone know why those disks die in the first place? Is it the controller that breaks? After hearing everywhere how unbreakable the SSDs are in comparison to hard drives, I haven't done a backup in months.
According to the posts in this discussion, there seems to be a great number of people having the same problem. If anyone tells me now that SSD failure is 'extremly rare' I will know better.
I visit the apple store on monday and hope for a wonder but I doubt they will change it out of warranty. How is your experience with OWC? I have seen that they also use the Sandstorm Toshiba controller and that scares me now.
Cheers.
