Q: Macbook Air SSD failure?

I've had my MBA for just under a year, and the SSD failed today.  I saw the dreaded white screen.  I took it into an Apple store, and they are having to replace the SSD.  Unfortunately, they didn't have the one I need in stock.  So, it will be a few days.  I'll be lost without my MBA.  LOL

Has anyone else had issues with SSD failure on MBA?  I hope this is not a common issue.  Luckily, it is still under warrants.  The part was about $800.

I have run it and got message "this computer does not need this update". I hope that this is because I got Samsung as a replacement and therefore will be fine

For those keeping a tally....my MBA (purchased July 10, 2012) failed about 2 weeks ago with only a blinking grey folder with question mark left. I felt the failure was something apple should fix and called apple support numerous times. Tonight, they called me to tell me they now recognize the problem and will fix it for free. Thank you to all who have written in....letting others, and apple see that the problem is widespread. I just hope the new ssd's last!

    My MBA is 2012 11" 128G SSD (TS128E)

I update the firmware and it does not shown that I need to replace my SSD.

Did anyone get the same message like me?

This means you need to replace your SSD. only if the update works then you have nothing to worry about.

Well that's great news. I wonder if this means I no longer need to be nervous about the replacement Toshiba drive now that the problem has been acknowledged. Though I can't help remaining concerned that it'll just implode again one day...

Ah, you're a star - thank you! Do I need to be "nervous" about running it...? If it does have the fault, do we know if it's likely to force it to die? :-/

    That wouldn't be the case.

After running same follow instructions from Apple on the first link.

nervous?   No.    always backup your vital data regardless of this SSD occurrence.

redundant data backup is the "etched in stone" rule all pros follow in computer use.

    Peace

And another one here (from London)

    Toshiba hard drive failure

I was a few days from end of the warranty but the Apple technical person confirmed that because there's a general problem, this would have been dealt with even if it was out of warranty.  Hopefully this helps some of you.

But I dont like the idea of putting in a hard drive when there is such clear evidence of widespread misfunction.  I asked for a Samsung and they said they had been doing it but have been told they cant.

So what happens in 3, 6 or 9 months when it happens again?  Who will pay?

This is my first MBA which i got cause I was told Apple crashed much less.... hmmm

    If you check here

    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookair-flashdrive/

It says: "The program covers affected MacBook Air for three years after the first retail sale of the unit. Apple will continue to evaluate service data and will provide further updates to this program as needed."

So the issue is probably resolved if not we all have 3 years to repair again for free until they fix the issue of the SSD.

Yeah and I got the cover. I first made a call in morning to customer Support to confirm if i am applicable for replacement or not (i was out of warranty from july2013, my drive crashed in aug2013). The support guy requested me to go to Service Center and give my machine there. Went to the Service Center in New Delhi, India. They asked few questions about how was failure done and then told me that they first diagnose it to check the issue. it was 12 pm. and after 6 hrs or so Apple Customer Support made a call to me and gave me the good news that they are covering the replacement under Quality Issue Programme and it will take a week to replace the flash drive. Wheewww what a relief.

For all of others there waiting to visit Service Center, I would recommend to make a call to Customer Support first as they are very helpful and taking this issue very seriously now.

Apple Customer support is really good. Thanks Apple.

Yes, I just did the update and got a message indicating that the firmware was successfully applied. Still doing frequent backups just in case.

Impressed that Apple is addressing this issue. Good customer support. I'm fortunate that I have not experienced data loss.
