Problem with standby

I have a new MacBook Pro 13-inch retina display. I usually do not switch it off but simply close the lid. The other day I noticed it became extremely hot when I did this and the fan was running. I opened it but it did not turn on until it cooled down. Could this be because of an open application? I have Bitorrent installed.
