Do i need an antivirus for my macbook pro 2012

Hi Apple fans i recently bought myself a 13" macbook pro 2012 model i love it.

I am aware that apple computers have built in virus protection people have told me that there have been a few virus attacks in the past

some people have said theres no chance of me ever getting a virus , but should i go the extra mile & buy an antivirus or download a free one just to be on the safe side .

If i should get an antivirus is there any ones in particular anyone could recommend to me ?

Thanks in advance

Barry

You really do not need such software. But for a more overall view see:

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using ClamXav.

No.

There have been no virus attacks that affected OS X. There are perhaps a few dozen malware programs out there, though.

It's not worth getting anti-virus, though. Mac AV is generally bloatware and most have less than stellar detection stats. Some are harmful, such as ones that delete important system files.

Just don't visit unsafe websites like sites for pirating content, and you will likely never run into any malware.
