How do I compress a .mov to edit in iMovie

I want to edit my .mov on iMovie but the program won't import it because it is too large (I think). How can I compress it for editing? I am using a MacBook Pro with 2G free. The numbers are: HDV 1080i Linear PCM 16 bit 2 ch, 48000HZ FPS 29.97, Data 21.39GB, Data Rate 26.53 Mbit/s Current 1,280x720 pixels.

iMovie '08, Mac OS X (10.7.4), I am a neophyte. Need step by step

Yes this is way to low.

I never let my MBP go less than 25Gb (when all material are imported) !

So You need to free up lot's of lot's of space to get iMovie to work as intended.

If You use an external hard disk to off load some old projects onto - THEN IT HAS TO BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - ELSE it will go terribly wrong as UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - WILL NOT WORK.
