Aug 3, 2013 1:03 PM in response to ghtjclarkby The hatter,Buy a set. Wipe what is on there. Some apps now require 10.7.5.
10.6, 3 DVD is $20-30, and 10.7 is also, or there is 10.8.4
Take a look at http://www.apple.com/iphoto

Aug 3, 2013 2:58 PM in response to ghtjclarkby ghtjclark,Thank you to Grant Bennet-Aider and The Hatter.
I have tried the 'Repair Disk Permissions' facility but this has not changed anything unfortunately.
I still see the rotating icon against a grey background when I try to open the program.
Thank you.

Aug 3, 2013 3:43 PM in response to ghtjclarkby LarryHN,SOmething is wrong here - did you purchase a used computer? If so the seller should supply the restore disks - if you pruchaed a new computer with OS X 10.6.8 on it you would have received disks with it
For now backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the database
