Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
When people send me an emoticon/smiley in a text to my iPhone 5, I don't get an actual emoticon, just the symbols. So when, for example, someone sends me a smiley face, all I get is :-) rather than the image. Is there a way to fix this?

Are these being sent by other iPhone users? It may be this is a special font or other program generated icon from another phone that is not supported on the iPhone. This is also assuming that you have the Emoji keyboard loaded on your device.
Mixture of other iPhone users, blackberry & android. I have the emoji keyboard and use it fine, with most people being able to see the emoticons I send them. I just get the symbols.
What user troubleshooting have you done? From the User Guide, it is restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.

The phone was reset as new last week.
I have the emoji keyboard that was built in to the iPhone 5 keyboard. But I haven't downloaded any other emoji platforms on top of that
You mean that it was restored as new? If restored as new and you are still experiencing the problem, I have no other ideas, except what I listed earlier as being from different programs. I suppose if there is an Apple Store close by, you could make an appointment and stop by there and have them check the device.
Have you enabled the Emoji keyboard?
Yeah, I meant restored. I restored it last week sometime but problem still there! Will definitely pop into apple store on Monday and see if they can help me.

Are the people that are sending you emoji's also iDevice users? Are they using a third-party app for their emoji's? Can you not recieve emoji's from only one person, or from all your contacts? Thats just a few of the things i would find out before going to the Apple Store
She already reported earlier it was a combination of users with different devices.

It's from any contact that sends me an emoticon. Even in iMessage. My partner sends them from the standard smileys on his android and all I receive are the symbols, the same with my sister & my mum who has a Nokia windows phone. I can't see any emoticons at all, no matter who sends them. I can send them to everyone though, and they receive them fine.
Can't see emoticons when sent from others.
