Boot up HD & backup HD do not show in Startup pane of System Preferences.

I tried posting this earlier & this site went down on me. Please ignore the earlier post which I can't delete! (Good going Apple!)

I migrated to a new Mac Mini but my old HD shows in the Startup pane. The old HD was running OSX server. Other than that there is little difference between the old & new sytems. Old Mini was a 2010 running OSX 10.8.2 Server; new one is a 2012 Mini running OSX 10.8.4 non server. My backup drive does not show up at all. When I restart the Mini using the Option key both drives show up correctly. Problem is only in the Startup pane. I reset PRAM, fixed preferences & verified & repaired the Mac HD boot up drive from the backup volume. Nothing worked. Any ideas?

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Do you mean that the volume you're actually booting from doesn't appear in the preference pane? If so, unmount all other volumes and check again.

Yes. Sorry if I use the wrong terminology. I unmounted all other volumes but same result.

When you unmounted all other volumes, whatever you saw in the preference pane was the volume you're booted from, perhaps with a name you didn't expect.
