Sorry, I cannot offer any troubleshooting suggestions without knowing which OS is currently installed on the MBP. I do not want to cause any further damage. Different OS (versions) have different troubleshooting solutions.
Are you the admin? If not, ask the owner which OS is installed? As the owner, you should be "aware" of the OS that is installed.
