Q: iCloud Storage to be cut!

I have just been informed that my iCloud storage is going down to the 5Gb free allowance. As i have a MacBook Air, iPad, iPhone 4s & iPhone 5 how can I combine all the 5Gb free accounts to give me 1 20Gb allowance? or is this not possible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

You can't. Apple only offers you 5 GB of storage for all your devices, not 5 GB more for each device, so if you don't want to pay, you will only have 5 GB of storage for all your devices.

If it's important for you to store data in the cloud, use another service like Dropbox or SkyDrive. iCloud is focused on data sync between your devices more than store data

    Hello

Thank you for your promt reply.

I am having a problem with this policy?

If Apple are prepared to give you 5Gb of storage for each device you register under a differant account, would it not be good for customer relations to offer to combine all accounts into one?

I think this would be good for Apple in the amount of server space and account management that would be saved, it would also be a winner for Apple with the community as everyone would really be able to store everything in the one place.

We think the same, but as you can see, Apple hasn't implemented it yet. You can send the idea to Apple if you want > http://www.apple.com/feedback

But the whole point of iCloud is you use the same SINGLE account across ALL your devices - otherwise the syncing aspect of iCloud does not work.

Photo Stream, Contacts, Bookmarks, Calendars, Find my iPhone etc. do not work across iCloud accounts.

    Hello

If I buy a device Apple will give me the opportunity to register that device with a new account and get a 5Gb allowance.

If I buy a second device I will have the opportunity to register that device with a new account and get a 5Gb allowance.

If I bought a second device and registered it with the same account as the first account, Why can Apple not give me the 2 x 5Gb allowances and only use the one account?

If I buy a third device then 3 x 5Gb = 15Gb allowance. The devices are all in the same account making syncing work accross all devices.

I'm sure they could if they really wanted to. Apple have enough money in the bank to give away lots of their products to large portions of the population. But to do so wouldn't make much financial sense. Apple are a business, if you'd forgotten.

You're already getting a lot of functionality and storage for FREE. If you can afford three iOS devices (lucky you), then I'm sure you could afford the $20 a year to give you the 15GB you feel you're entitled to.

iCloud may be free to end users, but it isn't free to develop, support, maintain and improve. Apple has to recover costs somehow. And just like all other cloud service providers, they offer a limited amount of storage for free, and if you choose to buy more devices, and decide you want more storage, you pay.

It astounds me how much people expect to get for free these days. And no matter how much they are already given for free, they expect even more... Nobody wants to pay for anything anymore. Absolutely unbelievable...

    Okay here we go!

I chose to use apple products and have done for many years going back to iPods and iPhone 3.

I am not looking for anything for free, i am just asking for all the free bits that Apple give me to be combined into one account. Do you have a problem with that?

It is just simple maths... or would you like me to do a Keynote presentation (another buy from Apple along with Filemaker Pro, Filemaker Server and other expensive software produced by Apple) for you. If you had read the first post you would have seen I listed four (4) ios Devices not 3. Simple maths

Please engage your brain before answering what is a reasonable question, if you cannot do that, please do not reply.

Look... iCloud storage is per account, not per device. Always has been. A single iCloud account is supposed to be used on all devices a single person uses.

For some unknown reason, you have chosen to setup different iCloud accounts on each of your devices thereby making most of iCloud's feature-set useless to you, despite Apple making it very clear on the iCloud info pages that iCloud's purpose is to keep your info in sync across multiple devices. Nowhere does Apple tell you to create a separate iCloud account for each device to use iCloud across multiple devices.

Why on earth would you do this? Sounds like you're the one who should've engaged his/her brain when setting up iCloud on the devices...

Fact is, there is no way to merge iCloud accounts or otherwise combine the storage in them. If there was, people would just go around creating dozens and dozens of free 5GB account and merging them to obtain limitless amounts of free storage.

If you want to keep your free 20GB of storage, keep your current separate iCloud accounts and do without the majority of iCloud features across your multiple devices.

If you want 20GB of storage in a single account, pay for it like everyone else has to.

Okay, lets look at this another way:

    Q. If I buy a device, does Apple give me 5Gb of free space?

    A. Yes

    Q. If a buy a second device, does Apple give me 5Gb of free space?

    A. Yes

If I buy 2 devices i can get 2 account with 5Gb each totaling 10Gb

If I combine 2 devices with a single account Apple give me only 5GB. Who is the winner? Apple or me?

As far as I can see, Apple is the winner again.

You really do not want to know how much I spent on hardware and software over the last 3 years so when you talk about business, at least try and incorporate simple maths along with some economics. No wonder Apple has so much in the bank as you say!

    Q. If I buy a device, does Apple give me 5Gb of free space?

    A. Yes

    Q. If a buy a second device, does Apple give me 5Gb of free space?

    A. Yes

No. They do not. You have this 100% WRONG.

Apple gives you 5GB of free space when you open an iCloud account. The storage space DOES NOT come free with the device when you buy it. As I've already said, storage is per iCloud account, not per iOS device. Please understand that simple fact.

When you setup a second, third, fourth, fifth iOS device, you are given the choice whether to sign in to an existing iCloud account (whereby the device is automatically configured with all your existing iCloud data), or you can setup a new empty iCloud account. If you take the latter option you get the free 5Gb of free storage and an empty iCloud account not connected to any other device.

You are given this choice because (as advanced as iOS devices are) they cannot know whether you are an existing iCloud user or a new user. As an existing iCloud user, you should've chosen the option to use an existing iCloud account.

You've been given the facts of the situation, your misunderstandings have been corrected - if you still don't agree with it, you've also been given the feedback link to tell Apple directly. There's nothing more to be said.

Actually, everyone missed one point, when a device is priced, the cost of icloud storage space for that device is also included in it that is why they are able to give you 5gb each for each user ID, in nutshell there is nothing free coming with apple device purchase, it is paid for.  What they are trying by giving only 5gb per user ID irrespective of the number of devices used is pure broadlight looting, they take money from you when you buy each device and give you nothing, This is a case of goods and services bought but not fully deliverd ie apple can be suied for discreminatory treatment towards it's users. I wonder why no one tried this yet in America where everyone sue everyone for petty things..... there is no one to take up this issue? . if tim got any love for the guys who shell out money for the devices his company makes, he should be implimenting this as priority before someone wake up from sleep and sue him.
