Q: When on a call, why is there no sound alert for any incoming mail/message?

When on a call, if I receive a message or an email there is no sound alert at all so I do not know I received a mail or a message unless I take the phone away from my ear and visually check it. Please help.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Call waiting Turn on or off inSettings > Phone Contact your carrier for information on using Call Waiting
