My Mac seems to not want to update

I have a small amount of updates to install (Jave for Mac OSX 10.6 Update 16, MacBook SMC Firmware Update, Secutity Update 2013-003, Apple Software Installer Update, Safari). However, when the computer restarts, it goes to the 'space screen,' and no progress bar starts to indicate that any software is installing. Furthermore, I do not hear any hard drive sounds that would indicate any installing activity. I can force shutdown and restart, and the computer works fine, but no updates are done. Also, I tried installing only the first three items, and the last two items separately to see if one of them were hanging up the install, but neither worked. Any ideas?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

jbohn,

Have you tried downloading from Apple's site not using software update?

Try the stand alone updates one at a time.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1569 Safari 5.1.9

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1512 Apple installer update

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573 Java 10.6 update 16

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1670 Security update 2013-003

http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=MacBook%20firmware%20update Firmware Choose the one that software update specified.

In Safari preferences>general, set save downloaded files to desk top, after you download, launch the installer.

Hope this helps.
