Hello packerfan07,

I would take a look at this section of the article named iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538.

3. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed

iOS devices require Apple Mobile Device Support, which should be automatically installed with iTunes. To verify whether it is installed, follow the steps appropriate for your Windows operating system below.

  • Windows XP: Click Start and choose Control Panel. Open the "Add or Remove Programs" control panel and verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is visible in the list of currently installed programs.
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click Start and choose Control Panel. Click "Uninstall a program" (or if using Windows Vista's Classic View of the Control Panel, click "Programs and Features"). Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is visible in the list of currently installed programs.
  • Windows 8: Move the cursor to the upper right corner, click the magnifying glass, type Control Panel, and press Return. Click "Uninstall a program". Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is visible in the list of currently installed programs.

If Apple Mobile Device Support is not listed, remove iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Application Support, and then reinstall iTunes. Follow the steps appropriate for your Windows operating system below:

If after reinstalling iTunes Apple Mobile Device Support is still not installed, follow steps in Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows.

All the very best,

Sterling

Just because apple mobile device support is listed doesn't mean it's going to work. It was listed in my control panel but still wouldn't work. I ended up deleting everything apple...(heck, here.....my copy paste message for the others...)

I just fixed my ipod nano problem on my own and figured I'd share as I have just spent the last 4 hours trying to trouble shoot all of Apple's problems...following everyone's tips...nothing worked until I figured it out on my own.

I'm running windows 7 and have an Ipod Nano (6th Gen). Hard drive crashed on computer. Replaced HD. Everything works fine now. Downloaded iTunes along with all other programs. Nano wouldn't show up or sync on iTunes. Said Device Driver Software was not successfully installed (some USB problems). Tried everything. Finally, I figured it out.

Disconnect Nano. Uninstall iTunes AS WELL AS

Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update. Apple only

tells you to uninstall iTunes and reinstall..restart computer bla bla bla. I said screw it and uninstalled all Apple programs (well, the listed ones above). I hooked up my nano to my computer to make sure the device manager recognized it without anything else plugged in...and it did. I unplugged it. Reinstall iTunes and all three other Apple programs listed above will also reinstall. I opened iTunes and plugged in my nano. It started with the "installing device driver software" and I was sure

it wasn't going to work. Well, it did work. My nano showed up in the upper right bar of iTunes and synced. Unreal... I unplugged my nano and plugged in the wife's. Once again, "installing device driver software." Voila! Her's showed up and synced too. I plugged mine back it to make sure it worked and it did. I'm done. It's working. Hope these steps work for you as well.

in the troubleshooting that the sterling guy said, there is an article about uninstalling iTunes that says to uninstall all the stuff you said to uninstall.

Coulda saved yourself a whooooole lotta time by reading the article.

Just FYI

I came across this thread because I was having the same issue with my iPhone 5s and is resolved now.

I read the article. In fact, looking above, it says...

If Apple Mobile Device Support is not listed, remove iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Application Support, and then reinstall iTunes. Follow the steps appropriate for your Windows operating system below.

I checked my programs and Apple Mobile Device Support WAS listed. I turned the service off and then back on. But why would I uninstall everything and reinstall if Apple Mobile Device Support was listed in my programs? That's not what the directions and support info said...

thank you. This morning I got a couple of updates for itunes which I said ok to. Next thing my nano was not recognised by itunes so I could not sync. Worked my way through all the apple support tips. Nothing except I could see that there was no Apple USD driver...so I after two hours I read your note and then uninstalled all apple programs.. Then downloaded itunes again for about the 4th times this morning..and yes my itunes is now speaking to the nano and I am syncd. At least I did not waste another two.

In my case when the phone was plugged into my Windows 7 64-bit laptop the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver showed up in Device Manager but not the Portable Devices Apple iPhone. I did not have iTunes or QuickTime on my laptop. However I went to Control Panel- Uninstall Programs - Apple Mobile Device Support - Right Clicked and did a repair. This fixed my iPhone connection problem.

Just uninstall everything Apple related and reinstall. It'll take just as much time and you know it'll be done right. This is what I finally had to do and once everything was reinstalled, I had to redownload al my songs from the cloud into ITunes (for some reason...you might not) and voila...it was fixed. SUCH a pain...and annoying as all ****. But, we got it fixed. Nano is recognized...it'll sync...and everything is good.

I have the same problem with apple mobile device. Everyones solution is to reinstall itunes. I have lots of folders and around 100 + playlists. **** I'm not going redo all that ! I'll buy an apple mac and carry it over to that computer. I don't really have the money to do it that way but somehow I'll do it. Windows just suck and apple devices just doesn't mix. I always have somekind of problems with windows/microsoft. I have a few ipods n iphone and probably get an ipad when they get to 512 gb, might as well go all out n get the ficking computer too. I just can't belive there's not a way of fixing the problem without taking away all the songs. Re putting all my folders and playlists will take fooooooooreveeeeeeer !! POS windows !!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.
