How do I get my keyboard shortcuts to be the same on my iPhone and iPad?

I can't seem to get the keyboard shortcuts on my iphone 5 to sync properly with my ipad 2 or ipad mini? I'm on the same wifi network using the same icloud account but everytime I turn documents on it brings back my first shortcut list and I lose all my new ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, but I'm still having issues, the new ones always come back to my iphone 5 when I turn documents on and off in icloud, but on my ipad 2 when I turn off and on all the old ones come back with no new ones, my ipad mini is now empty after turning documents on and off. Is there a way I can make one device the master and then the other 2 update when I update the master device?

To the best of my knowledge, keyboard shortcuts are not synced by icloud, but rather part of your icloud/itunes backup settings. Up till now the only way I know, to get rid of old shortcuts, is to completely restore and set up as new. Hence there is no way to copy from master device (unless you decide to risk restoring ipad from iphone backup- and yes it can be done). Essentially in documents and settings - shortcuts are settings, not the documents. I did work on similar problem about a year ago, to be honest only once. Would you mind if I think about that for a day or so. May be someone smarter then me will chime in during that time.

Thank you for clarifying that shortcuts are settings, I did not know that. I appreciate you getting back to me and I can't believe you understood what I meant.....you deserve a 2 day break just for that! I'm sorry for the miscommunication on my end, I have no desire to get rid of old shortcuts, my issue is that I'd like to figure out, if and if so, which device I can use to add new shortcuts or update old ones. I got an iphone 5 back in June and I think that may be the culprit as both old and new shortcuts stay on it for the most part so as I use the other devices I'm slowly but surely adding back in the new shortcuts. You have helped more than you know already bc I was thinking about doing the restore in ipad from iphone and you confirmed that its possible. Take all the time you need and again, many thanks.

I'm not sure I can add anything to this discussion. The setting that controls iCloud keyboard shortcut syncing it Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data. If you are signed into the same iCloud account on all your devices with this setting turned on, keyboard shortcuts added or deleted to any of the devices should be reflected on the others. Here's a video demonstrating this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlv63GbCmds.

If you can't seem to get them in sync, you may need to turn off Documents & Data on all your devices, then create a consistent list of shortcuts on all of them followed by turning Documents & Data back on on all your devices. Then test each device to see if an added (or deleted) shortcut appears on the others.

Thank you so much, Randers, as always!

So it appears we have few solutions in order of complication of the problem (possibly corruption of ipad's software)

1. Turn all the shortcuts off, just like in the video, and create the same couple shortcuts on all and turn it on. I to be honest think that will not work, since you described something similar before, but never hurts to try. If that does not work go to step 2

2 It actually seems to me that your ipad is the culprit, since old shortcuts show up there, so you want to backup as much info from ipad as you can (import pictures, create list and backup anything that you may need manually). And restore ipad as new. DO NOT Restore from backup. Do not sync with itunes yet. Once done it should work, please verify if everything works like in the video.

3. If all of that fails, you may be right and the problem is the phone. You have to do the same as number 2 with the phone. Since phone usually has critical info, please create backup in icloud, besides backing up everything you can manually. Just in case backup is corrupted and you can't use it.

Depending on how critical it is for you, think before you go to numbers 2 and 3. Good luck.

Thank you both randers4 & fromsouth your replies & efforts are greatly appreciated. I tried step 2 above & the words showed up thrice on my iPhone but once I turned the shortcuts off/on again have now disappeared on my iPhone 5, iPad 2 & iPad mini. I've noticed that all newer shortcuts have remained the same across all 3 devices so I tried to correct 2 or 3 & the edits stayed on both the iPhone 5 & iPad 2 but not the iPad mini. Please note the iPad mini is the newest device I've purchased so I'm thinking I'm going to do a restore as new on the mini. I will wait to see if anyone thinks I shouldn't do so, but again many thanks.

Again, thanks fromsouth, I 1st restored the mini as new, then the problem popped up on the ipad 2 so I restored that as new, now I have the original, unedited words on all 3 devices, maybe the iphone 5 is the culprit?!?!?!? AARRRGGHHHH! I'd ideally like to figure out which is the device that I can use as the master preferably the ip5; any input? Now I'm just on my MBP and wanting to return the ipads LOL!! 😕

See usually very first device(people used for a while) is the problem since it has longest collective backup. The way you described last time - problem was eliminated on all but one, but it looks like problem takes time to reproduce. If you restored anything from backup - then those backups can be a problem. Before you go to next step try to give yourself a day and verify that the rest of the devices work correctly. If you have backups of the ipads in the cloud it may or may not be functional for you to get those back. Give yourself time to eliminate to one device that does not work.

Verify that the rest works, by creating few shortcuts. Repeat it next day and verify again. Only after that restore.

At that point it bacame a pain, too many devices need to be restored and I do not like that, cause it shows that different shortcut lists come from different sources. I would be looking at eliminating source ( maybe sync with certain work computer ) - problem is we can't track source without finding device responsible.

I'm right there with you and at this point I can't add and/or edit a shortcut or turn on/off icloud documents one more time, it's not even noon and my ip5 is off. I might just restore the ip5 in a few for consistency's sake. I have a MBP, back up to both the MBP and the cloud, I don't like to use computer(s) elsewhere, after I restore the ip5 as new I'm planning on deleting all shortcuts on all devices, turning documents off on ipads, on on ip5 and solely using shortcuts on ip5. I think I'm doing what you just typed above and then in a few days, possibly turning documents on on an ipad. In retrospect I should've restored the ip5 as new in the 1st place. Trial and error, but I'm the type of person who can not rest until I know I've exhausted all avenues and the added bonus will be to help others who may be going through the same now or in the future to come to a concrete resolution and most importantly to give you an answer, but that is out of pure respect and appreciation. Wish me luck!
