I took my macbook pro to the beach...

I took my macbook pro to the beach recently and while I was there, I noticed that it was making electronic/metallic noises when turning on. Also, when gently tilted from side to side, the computer sounds like something is loose inside. Do you think that sand somehow got in or do you think that the issue is more serious? Thanks for your help!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

"when you took it to the beach" Ouch,... well sand could NOT get into the HD, thats impossible,

only 2 option for making a noise when turned on, from the FAN or very unlikely the optical bay laser assy. rail

Dont turn it back on, take it to Apple store local and let them have a look, book an appt. If its old and out of warr. I myself would take the bottom case plate off and see what the issue is, but its likely your not comfortable doing that.

I see! I think most of us pictured someone in board shorts 10 feet from the surf with their macbook ! 😝

When you say "metallic noises", could you be more specific.

Do you have pets and a lot of dust/fur in your home? Noises generally only have 3 possibilities in most laptops, fan, HD, and DVD/CD

If you could be more specific, process elimination could be done to determine the error, however sounds like you need to make a Genius Bar appt. regardless.

I do have dogs in my house, but they are not allowed upstairs or in my room, where my laptop is normally kept. The noise is hard to explain, and generally only happens when the laptop is doing something, as in turning on or loading something, and even then, only when moved during that time. The noise is located, if you are looking down at keyboard of the open laptop, in the top left corner, and usually is like a grinding sort of noise. Also, something still sounds loose inside, as in a screw. Um, hopefully that helps you a bit?

top left is the fan. Theres only 2 possibilities if there isnt a CD/DVD in it, .....you pinpointed it.

Sounds like you have a fan going bad, or clogged with crud at the hub.

old laptop or new? A Fan is actually a hard part to kill/go bad. If old, id say dust and grime and the fan going bad.

On old laptops, .....youd be amazed at what cakes onto a fan and its blades,...which slow it down, make it run hot....then it overloads the bearings.........then kaput. A leads to B leads to C.....then. X

If NEW, id take it back for service, is it under warranty?

I got my macbook pro last Christmas, so I don't think it is that old to begin accumulating stuff...

I only got a 90 day technical support, but I have one year of hardware repair warranty that I can use at any Apple store. We don't have an Apple store, but we do have a Peachmac store, so hopefully I will be able to use the warranty there.

Because it has warranty, does that mean the repairs, if necessary, are free?

Thanks so much! I took my mac to the Peachmac store and they ran a few tests and although they don't know exactly what happened, they told me my fan wasn't working properly. And since I have warranty, I can drop it off at Peachmac so they can send it to Apple to get it fixed. I would have just left it there, but they said they might erase the hard drive so I'm backing up my computer before I hand it over... Again, thanks so much, you have been a big help!
