I could not quit mail. In the drop down menu I have no access to the quit commando

Close out all Mail.app-related dialog boxes and other mail windows, if open.

Failing that — and as a last resort here — option-click on the Mail.app icon in the Dock, and select Force Quit from the pop-up menu.

Caveat: this isn't a recommended exit path, and can potentially lead to other problems with Mail.app. You may, for instance, need to rebuild some mailboxes, should whatever Mail.app is stuck on get corrupted by the hang and the subsequent Force-Quit. You probably won't lose data, but I can't be entirely certain of that.
