Why can't I add a bookmark to subfolders in the bookmark bar by drag-n-drop?

Way back in the '90s, there used to be a Mac browser (IE?) that allowed you to drag a URL from the address bar, hover it over a bookmark folder in the bookmark bar, and it would spring open to expose all the subfolders, and allow you to drop the new URL into any of the exposed subfolders.

This remains, without a doubt, the most effective, straightforward, simple, and efficient way of filing bookmarks I've ever experienced.

Why doesn't Safari use this system? Or does it, and I just don't know how to enable it? If it doesn't, how can I suggest this to the Safari team?

The keyboard shortcut Command + D is about as close as you get with Safari.

Microsoft did support IE for Macs many years ago but not now.

Thanks for the feedback link Carolyn. After posting I checked, and both Firefox and Chrome support this feature, making all the more perplexing that Apple doesn't.

You can click the Bookmarks icon then drag a url from the address bar to a folder.

Safari 7 looks likely to allow dragging from the address bar to folders in the sidebar - although no mention of drag/drop onto sub-folders in the bookmarks (favorites) bar. But there is a + button just to the left, which may allow '1-click' adding to sub-folders, Reading List etc (more here)

Yes, but that's only a partial solution. I'm sure I'm not alone on having subfolders in my bookmark bar folders. But these subfolders can't be accessed using the drag and drop method that was, as I mentioned, available in the '90s, and is currently supported by both Firefox and Chrome.

Let's hope they catch up to their competitors' bookmarking technology. Enabling spring-loaded bookmark bar folders seems like a pretty simple, logical enhancement.

I may yet. But I'd prefer to offer suggestions that will make Apple products better, and in doing so, add value to the community of users.
