How do I reverse the extended desktop displays?

I am trying to help a friend set up a macbook pro 2012 to display an extended desktop onto their video projector. After turning on the projector, I plug in the miniport adapter to the MBP. The projector display becomes the desktop and the laptop acts like the extended display. My own macbook doesn't respond that way. Why does his and how do I correct it?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Open System Preferences > Display, then click the "Arrangement" segment:

now arrange the two displays as needed

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement >Drag the menu bar to the main monitor. You can also move the monitors to the position that resembles their setup.
