For months I have been copying image files to an external drive connected via USB. All of a sudden I get the prompt the finder can't copy because some data can't be read or written )error -36). The card WILL copy to the iMac's internal drive. Any thoughts?

Hi Bill, I suspect that USB drive might be FAT32 Format, is that so?

If so, the root of the drive will be limited to 128 to 255 item, & you need to remove at least one item to makje a Folder to put new ones into, or move exiting ones to.

Thanks for the suggestion. There are only 105 items on the drive and I can create new folders on it. I still can't copy images into those folders. The format for the 1 TB drive under Disk Utility says: "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and that 80.88 GB are available. (I don;t know how to determine iof its FAT32.) Everyone can read/write to the volume.

Well, in pure Apple File System talk... -36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)

Not very helpful, but generally means a Drive quit being Readable or Writable since starting the operation...

So, I thing the external drive is either failing or possibly if it has an AC power supply that is failing, quite common on those.

Many brands more than mentioned, & the hissing is far less frequent than the i/o errors are...
