Problem left clicking Mighty Mouse on Photoshop Tools Palette

Sorry if I'm posting to the wrong forum. Not sure were to ask this but...

After installing the Mighty Mouse I've notice it's not behaving exactly as I would have expected. The biggest problem is I have to click twice now on tool palette selections when using Photoshop. Single clicking (with left button set to primary button) on a tool spawns the fly-out menu as though I was option-clicking or right-clicking on the tool selection.

Is there a FAQ, extension update, Photoshop hack, incompatibility, or something else I should be looking for? When I do Software Update it says I'm up to date. This must have been covered somewhere else but Yahooing and Googling haven't resulted in any actual answers.

The problem has been bothering my for a few months now and only really starts to become painful when I'm working for long periods on large projects doing a lot of clicking.

I don't want to revert to my old single-click mouse or have to buy another brand. I've checked my preferences and the left mouse button is not set to double-click ro secondary. If anyone has experienced this specific problem and has found a way to fix please let me know!

Thanks,
DAN

DAN,

You said "I have to click twice now"

Not meaning to mince words but your statement is open to two interpretations. First interpretation: before you changed to the Mighty Mouse you only had to click once.

Or, second: Mighty Mouse used to work with one click but now requires two clicks.

"I don't want to revert to my old single-click mouse" leads me to believe the Mighty Mouse never worked in single click mode. Is this correct?

Our Mighty Mouse often changes behavior for some unknown reason but will bounce back after a restart or resetting preferences.

"Sorry if I'm posting to the wrong forum. Not sure were to ask this but..."

This is the old folks home section of the forums where die hards gather to make sure no Mac dies a premature death, regardless of cost in time or money. There is nothing wrong with posting in multiple places to attract different audiences. I would suggest here.

This problem is software related more than hardware related so the 10 4 good buddies should be up to speed on how to resolve the idiosyncracies of that mouse.

Thanks for the critique Jim. I actually have posted this in the forum you recommended and haven't received and response. Thanks for the replying with a recommendation towards helping me resolve this though 🙂 Perhaps if I explain the issue better someone might recognize it.

As for how many clicks does it take to select a tool in Photoshop...

Typically, when working in Photoshop, just one click in the Photoshop tools palette is enough to select the clicked upon tool. It is also typically possible to option-click or right click on some tools which creates a flyout sub menu letting users select variations of the tool - an oval marquee instead of the square marquee for example. Using and older mouse or a different brand of tow button mouse I could click once on the tool too select it as expected. Now using the Mighty Mouse if I click once it acts as though I option-clicked or right-clicked and the flyout sub menu appears and it should not be. Now to get the flyout sub menu to go away I have to click a second time on the tool I want so the flyout sub menu disappears and I can use the tool that I clicked on. If someone has actually experienced this specific problem I bet they will know exactly what I'm describing. Otherwise it might be too difficult for me to describe.

Left-clicking and right-clicking work great in other programs besides Photoshop. If you're wondering if the left-button can single click (single-click mode?) on something else, yes, everything else works great! The problem is just with Photoshop tools palette and using the left-click mouse button.

sfdesigner,

Thanx 4 the added detail. I frequenty get a right click response instead of a left click action with the MightyMouse but I blame my clumsy fingers. lol Sounds like your issue is specific to Photoshop.

Have you tried turning off the right click feature completely in preferences to try and isolate the issue to a particular set of circumstances?

DAN-

Does your version of Photoshop [which one is it?] have any extra preferences for dealing privately with other input devices, like trackballs or tablets?

Could there be some settings that have become active because the Mighty Mouse works somehow differently from your other input devices?

Is there an option in the Mighty Mouse Preferences that allows different settings for different software?

Could it be broke?

Thanks for the replies.

I've been trying a few things and haven't had any luck - such making the right button the primary key also (so there shouldn't be secondary right click functionality coming from the mouse), tried adjusted the double-click speed fast and slow, disabling horizontal and vertical scrolling, making sure universal access options are all off, and reviewed my Photoshop keyboard shortcuts for possible causes. I don't have trackballs or tablets and I'm using Photoshop 9.0.1.

I did try the using trackpad on the PowerBook (I typically avoid using it though unless I'm traveling and forgot my mouse) and I noticed using it has the same problem, so it's probably a Photoshop issue rather than Mighty Mouse. I'll have to move my inquiry to an Adobe forum now I think.

Thanks again for the replies I think I'm a little closer to figuring out what the issue is, and isn't 🙂
