This worked for me too!!!! I also had to put 8.8.4.4 as my secondary DNS server and also select my routers guest wifi. I actually created a guest wifi with no security for this purpose. i'll turn it off after I'm done with os x recovery.

Thanks so much for the help everyone! Now I don't need to go by a thunderbolt to Ethernet cable or take to apple store.

I'm in Australia and this didn't work for me. TP-Link Archer D2 modem.

Thanks to Apple for the advice What to do before you sell or give away your Mac - Apple Support to erase and format my hard drive before selling a 15" MBP 2016 model (I'm downgrading to a 2015 model because the new keyboard on the 2016 is as good as unuseable). This advice resulted in having no way to reinstall OS X except Internet Recovery - can't even boot from a USB drive! 😠

I have a ticket open with Support - first call I was basically told "just wait", but even after 4 attempts I keep getting 2002F. Will update when it's resolved, but I think I'll be making my way to a Genius Bar in coming days.

Apple has removed the information form that article as well.

Those (negative low thousands) error codes mean that in some fashion, your current Wi-Fi is inadequate to serve as a basis for Internet Recovery.

Common problems include:

Hidden Network-name

required use of a proxy server to get Internet access

required use of a login page to get Internet access

Use of a login server or certificate to get Internet access

Use of PPPoE in the Mac to get Internet access (typically only applies to DSL)

Use of Fixed IP address rather than good old DHCP

Failure of Router to provide workable DNS server addresses

If you have an Ethernet port, you may in some cases be able to move your Mac close to the Router and connect to the Router using Ethernet.

If your Boot Drive is not responding, then Recovery mode (which boots from a small, separate partition on the Boot Drive) may not be available either. That can cause your Mac to attempt to use Internet Recovery, and will usually display a spinning globe.

--------

Internet Recovery tries to get the Utilities need for recovery (and re-download) from the Internet, and present them to you. Internet Recovery (if your MacBook Pro from after about 2011 has that in its Firmware) has a set of strict requirements, especially concerning the setup of your Wi-Fi Network.

-2002F is said to be a Network error while trying to connect to an Apple server.

This article lists most of the attributes of your Wi-Fi network to make the connection. In addition to these, the Network-name can not be hidden.
