Safari quits by itself, no crash reports show up. How do I make it STOP closing/quitting itself?

Whenever I either close the last Safari window, or leave a few minimized (but not quitting Safari) or play a video in VLC (i.e) Safari seems to have quit itself entirely! I don't get any crash reports or notices about what might have occured, nor any error messages. It is very random, sometimes it just quits when I close the last open window, other times it will close even though I have several windows open, but it mostly seems to be happening when I play videos in fullscreen, and when i exit fullscreen mode Safari has quit itself along with closing all my windows. I've been through the preferences to see if it's been set to behave this way, but I find nothing.

I would really appreciate any help on this, as it is driving me crazy having to start up Safari every time I watch an episode or movie or do anything in fullscreen mode (which, is a pain considering how ridiculously slow it is, with pages not loading, or only half-loading or just seeing that god-awful rainbow-wheel for minutes at a time, and if anybody knows how to solve that last part too, please shout it out!). It even quits itself if I've simply just closed my MBP (not shutting it off), and then when I open it again (whether it is 10 minutes later or 5 hours later) Safari has quit and needs to be restarted/reopened.

Mac OS X (10.6.5)

According to your profile your Mac has v10.6.5 installed.

If that is the case, updating your system software may help the Safari issue.

Two ways to do this... click Software Update from your Apple () menu top left in your screen.

Or, install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

Restart your Mac after the updates are installed.

Try empthing the Safari cache more often to avoid the app from freezing.

Press Command + Option + E

Thank you so much for replying so quickly! Much appreciated.

My profile must be outdated somehow, as I have v10.8.4 installed at the moment, and there is no new updates as of ten minutes ago.

I tried intstalling the update combo, but it said I was required to have the v10.6 installed, which I don't.

Do you have any other suggestions? You seem like you know your stuff 🙂

I cleared all caches for Safari now, and I hope it might ease up some of the freezing at least!

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

As I am not entirely sure exactly when Safari closes I took a look on the clock, last time I checked it was 14.47, and when I minimized VLC it was approximately 15.24, and included everything in the log between that time. Hope it's not too many lines!

From the Safari menu bar, select

Safari Preferences Extensions

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

I ended up having to clean out my mac entirely, and re-install mac os x. Even though Safari has no extensions at all at this moment, it still shuts down randomly after watching stuff in VLC or after simply closing and opening the computer. Apple tech has no idea what is going on, and neither do I. The only programs installed on my computer atm are firefox, vlc, skype and utorrent.

Thank you again for trying to help me! Problem still not resolved 😟

Shut computer off, held down cmd + r while I turned it back on, total wipe of the computer, and did not restore anything from a back-up. Had to re-install those few programs individually, and it seemed that when I installed firefox and adblock plus extension plus a java update it all went down the drain. Disabled and deleted the extension for firefox, and also ended up deleting firefox from my computer.. Not sure whether I should re-install anything from the back-up or not 😟

Sorry if I wasn't being specific enough, not always sure how to frase computer-issues as English isn't my 1st language 🙂

Hmm.. I did install an extension on Firefox, Adblock Plus, updated java, installed VLC, Skype and utorrent (but those last two weren't installed immediately, so Safari had already shut itself off several times before they were in the picture).. It's all just so strange! Like I said, I've removed the extension for Firefox and deleted Firefox entirely.. These are the only installed programs I have on my computer, after I re-installed mac os x from scratch.

I'm not sure if Safari actually crashes, as I never get a crash report or any notice on what's happened, it just closes itself and disappears, and then I have to relaunch it and restore all windows and tabs, which really ***** as I sometimes am in the middle of things.

Aug 13, 2013 7:50 AM in response to ibg90

If all that's happening is that Safari quits automatically when no windows are open, that's normal. There is no problem at all.

Automatic and Sudden Termination of Apps

Automatic app termination manages the life cycle of apps behind the scenes, terminating apps that are not being used and allowing the reclamation of resources such as memory. With this feature, users no longer need to explicitly quit apps (although they still can, if they want to). Instead, the operating system is responsible for managing app processes with the goal of ensuring optimal system performance.
