Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article provides isolation steps for the symptoms you mentioned:
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3048#8
Use the Keyboard Viewer to test whether the keyboard keys are responding correctly when they are pressed.
1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Language & Text from the View menu (or International from the View menu in Mac OS X v10.5 or earlier).
2. Select Input Sources.
3. Select the Keyboard & Character Viewer checkbox.
4. Enable the input source for the keyboard layout you are testing by selecting the checkbox next to it.
5. Make sure that "Show Input menu in menu bar" is enabled.
6. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu in the menu bar, as shown.
7. The Keyboard Viewer shows the keyboard layout.
8. Type the key on the keyboard that doesn’t respond and observe whether the corresponding key highlights on the Keyboard Viewer. If it does, that particular key is functioning correctly. In the sample shown above the shift and command keys are being pressed.
9. If the mouse keys feature in the Universal Access System Preferences pane is enabled, many of the keyboard keys may not respond as expected.
10. Try starting up into single user mode to determine whether a software issue is causing the issue.
Thanks,
Matt M.

Jan 11, 2014 8:20 AM in response to matt00by Klundeen,This was very useful in helping me help my husband resolve his number key/shift character dilemma. He uses two keyboards and he had the alternate selected. Easy troubleshooting tips. I'm normally not a MAC person but can usually navigate through troubleshooting directions.

Nov 13, 2015 12:17 AM in response to matt00by stevie8ch,Hi
I have a MacBook Pro (2011 version) and the numbers keys 1 to 9 stopped working together with the key to the left of 1 (ss).
Using this keyboard viewer was great as it showed me the keys that worked - and seemed to confirm that the 10 keys didn't ....
Then about half hour after trying this, the key to left of 1 started working so only 1 to 9 not working now ...
DOes the fact that these number keys do no flash on this keyboard confirm that it is def a hardware/keyboard problem and not software?

Nov 18, 2015 8:48 PM in response to stevie8chby pinkforme,Stevie, Matt's response got me started in the right direction--yay!! Then this is what I figured out on my 2011 iMac: in System Preferences open Accessibility. Then open Mouse & Trackpad. THAT is where I found the box checked for Enable Mouse Keys. I unchecked it and my number pad is up and running again! I still have to figure out a few other things that got goofed up when I installed El Capitan. Hopefully, this helps you!
