I started the process of moving our itunes to an external drive. I (think) I followed directions I got on here. I checked the external and I see the music listed by artist in alphabetical order. But it does not look like it did before when it was listed in itunes. Just looks like a "list." Did I screw this up?
I am not quit sure what you mean.
All you have to do is copy your iTunes folder from your Music folder to the external drive.
Hold the OPTION key while launching iTunes > Choose library > navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file.

I went to launch iTunes and held option key and chose the ext drive and it says no iTunes in there. But when I open the ext by itself there is a folder in there named iTunes. I screwed something up.

Select the folder and iTunes will look for a valid iTunes library.itl file inside.
I can't locate the directions I used. But it was very similar to how I moved my iPhoto. I am not near the Mac right now, but it appears I moved the music but no iTunes operating system. Probably using the wrong words there, but it appears music files are sitting in there. are there accurate instructions on how to move iTunes here somewhere? If so I'll try again. I obviously grabbed the wrong thing (or partial) and dragged it in there. ****

Thanks Chris. I will try tonight when I get home. I thought that is what I did. It took about an hour and a half to move about 110G to the external....I think I'll restart the computer and then try to launch iTunes again.
Not trying to be stupid here, but it is what it is. Can you tell me exactly what folder and most important where exactly to find that folder?
If you open a finder window (command+N) in the Side Bar go to Music. That is where the iTunes folder will be. Move it to the external drive. Hold the option key while launching iTunes > Choose library > navigate to the iTunes folder you just moved. Done.
Axeman. I did that and I see it on the external drive. Blue iTunes folder. But when I try to launch with option key and it says choose, it says it can't find iTunes on the drive. It says an iTunes library file could not be found in "the folder MUSIC" which is what I named the external.

You need to select the folder with iTunes, not the drive itself.
As Chris said you have to chose the iTunes folder.
Also, make sure there is an iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder.
