Fed Up with Aperture

This is my last shot at getting Aperture 3 to work for me.

Despite the good efforts and advice of folks here in the Community, and conversations with Apple, I can't get the **** thing to work correctly with Photoshop. Or, I am not using it correctly. Either way, this should not happen:

User uploaded file

Doing everything by the book, using Photo> Edit in Photoshop CS4 >Save (in PS), this is what I get back in Aperture. The icons say it's been externally edited, but no editing appears. Sometimes the PS file comes back as an "Unsupported File Format," sometimes it comes back but without the editing as in this example.

Maybe if I shot only in JPEG and edited only inside Aperture, everything would work; but I will continue using Photoshop for layer blending and compositing RAW images, and Aperture obviously cannot deal with that process.

If anyone can intuit what's going wrong, or what I might be doing wrong, I welcome any suggestions before I junk the whole project and go back my old workflow. The only suggestion I get from Apple support is that I need to upgrade to CS6, but spending another $500 to use Aperture is out of the question.

Right now am fed up with spending time and effort editing only to see that work simply disappear into some digital black hole. Thanks for reading and any suggestions,

Brian

Hi Brian,

No one here can resolve your being frustrated. We can only trouble-shoot specific, reproducible problems. You have not -- as you surely know -- provided enough information in this post.

Your use of the phrase "compositing RAW images" jumps out at me. If you list the actions that you are taking, I (and likely others) will try to see why Aperture is not giving you the result you expect.

That said, I don't have CS4, but I might be able to tell if the issue shows up in PSCC.

HTH,

Kirby, thanks for the response.

Specifically, the workflow looks like this:

RAW (ORF) > Aperture > Photo > Edit in Photoshop CS4

CS4>

I do not think this problem is related to your work-flow. Adobe PS is unlikely to save your edited files into Aperture data files and folders. My guess is that your edited images are somewhere else. Have you searched to see where your photos are being saved?

The last step in your work-flow saves a *.psd file and suggests the root of the problem. It is OK to save a *.psd in case you need to revisit the image, but you should also save a copy as a *.tiff or *.jpg and import that into your picture database in Aperture.

As a follow up to my note above, I have tried to edit an image in Adobe PS. I was able to save as *.tif file which retains all the edits and which I could see in Aperture. Apparently, Photoshop does save into the same folder as the original file.

In light of this, I suggest that the prblem is that you saved a *.psd file which Aperture does not use. Try to save *.tif and let us know what happens.

Not true, Aperture is fine with PSD files and PSD filesare one of the types you can select to use when you send a file to an external editor. See Aperture->Preferences->Export;External Editor File Format

It will preserve the layers it just won't let you work with them from within Aperture.

The trick is to not do a save as from PS (or any external editor). You want the editor to save the changes back to the original file sent from Aperture.

See Using an External Editor in the Aperture manual.

Frank, I'm working with RAW files. When I use Aperture > Photos > Edit with Photoshop CS4 it converts the file from RAW (ORF) and sends the file to Photoshop as a TIFF. All PS editing is done and saved in that TIFF format. What comes back to Aperture should be TIFF (as a version of the master I suppose). But now Aperture is not even recognizing the TIFF version it converted and sent to PS (see below):

Hi Joe.

I stand corrected on *.psd format and Aperture.

That's not all. You wrote:

This is wrong and misleads. On the User Manual page that Frank helpfully linked:

When you’ve finished modifying the image, audio, or video file in the external application, save the file.

The saved file is automatically updated in Aperture.

At least, that's how it works when it works (and it works well most of the time).

It is always best to confirm your answer by trying it yourself before posting. In fact, this is explicitly recommended in the TOU (See 2.5):

Test your answer. When possible, make sure your Submission works on your own computer before you post it.

Let's focus on just the file type for a moment. You indicate you have set Aperture Prefs to send to the External Editor "PSCS4" as TIFF, but in the grid you posted above the file is a PSD.

Do you know where or how the file is being changed from TIFF to PSD?

Can you confirm your External Editor File Format setting?

(As long as you look at your Aperture Prefs -- what do you have set for "External Editor Color Space"?)

Frank, according to the file path, the file is there, it just can't be seen I guess.

Looking at Package Contents I got this string:

HD:USERS:Brian:Pictures>Aperture Library>Master>2013>08>02>20130802-134403>2013-08-...BAL2366(1)

And there it is in Finder, but in Aperture the version is showing up as "Unsupported Image Format."

Frank, the preferences are:

User uploaded file

I'm using TIFF now because I was having so much trouble with PSD files ("File Format Not Supported") that Apple Support said change the preferences to TIFF and stick with it and stop saving as PSD files. The "grid" is an older file using the PSD 16-bit preference, but as you can see above, even the TIFF files are having the same problem so the file type doesn't seem to matter,
