Hi Brian,

No one here can resolve your being frustrated. We can only trouble-shoot specific, reproducible problems. You have not -- as you surely know -- provided enough information in this post.

Your use of the phrase "compositing RAW images" jumps out at me. If you list the actions that you are taking, I (and likely others) will try to see why Aperture is not giving you the result you expect.

That said, I don't have CS4, but I might be able to tell if the issue shows up in PSCC.

I do not think this problem is related to your work-flow. Adobe PS is unlikely to save your edited files into Aperture data files and folders. My guess is that your edited images are somewhere else. Have you searched to see where your photos are being saved?

The last step in your work-flow saves a *.psd file and suggests the root of the problem. It is OK to save a *.psd in case you need to revisit the image, but you should also save a copy as a *.tiff or *.jpg and import that into your picture database in Aperture.

So you have your Aperture preferences setup to send a PSD file to PS right?

How are you ending the PS session, how are you 'saving' the file from PS?

As a follow up to my note above, I have tried to edit an image in Adobe PS. I was able to save as *.tif file which retains all the edits and which I could see in Aperture. Apparently, Photoshop does save into the same folder as the original file.

In light of this, I suggest that the prblem is that you saved a *.psd file which Aperture does not use. Try to save *.tif and let us know what happens.

Not true, Aperture is fine with PSD files and PSD filesare one of the types you can select to use when you send a file to an external editor. See Aperture->Preferences->Export;External Editor File Format

It will preserve the layers it just won't let you work with them from within Aperture.

The trick is to not do a save as from PS (or any external editor). You want the editor to save the changes back to the original file sent from Aperture.

That's not all. You wrote:

This is wrong and misleads. On the User Manual page that Frank helpfully linked:

When you’ve finished modifying the image, audio, or video file in the external application, save the file.

The saved file is automatically updated in Aperture.

At least, that's how it works when it works (and it works well most of the time).

It is always best to confirm your answer by trying it yourself before posting. In fact, this is explicitly recommended in the TOU (See 2.5):

Test your answer. When possible, make sure your Submission works on your own computer before you post it.

Let's focus on just the file type for a moment. You indicate you have set Aperture Prefs to send to the External Editor "PSCS4" as TIFF, but in the grid you posted above the file is a PSD.

Do you know where or how the file is being changed from TIFF to PSD?

Can you confirm your External Editor File Format setting?

(As long as you look at your Aperture Prefs -- what do you have set for "External Editor Color Space"?)
