mail delay

I got an Iphone and a macbook air. As soon as I get a mail it pops up on my iphone screen, whereas it takes about 2-5 min to pop up on my mac screen. Why is there such delay??? Can anyone help me out?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
