Q: Is it still possible to update to Logic 9.18?

Have been happily running the App Store version of Logic 9.17 on a two year old machine under OSX 10.7. Everything worked and I didn't feel any need to update. I am not interested in Logic X, version 9 does all I need.

Just got a new Mac with OSX 10.8 and thought I should start off right by downloading Logic 9.18 - not sure if it even matters though since I haven't put the new machine through its paces yet. Anyway, when I go to the App Store, it does not show Logic on the Updates page (it did prior to the release of Logic X). If I go to the Purchased Apps page, it does show Logic 9 and indicates an update is available.

If I click on it, the store asks for my password, then gives me an "Error 1004 please try again later" alert.

On another forum someone pointed me to a standalone installer at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1601?v...S&locale=en_US

I tried this and got an alert saying that my version of Logic could only be updated through the App Store. Has anyone else seen this problem? Am I stuck with 9.17? If I delete Logic, can I download again from the App Store and get 9.18? Will that force me to also re-download the required content over my slow DSL connection here in the sticks?

Error 1004 is usually caused by an Apple Server issue that is temporary and will fix itself over time.,

However, you can sometimes speed up the fix by signing out and then signing back into the Mac App Store.. This sometimes forces the Mac App Store app to connect to a different server which isn't having a problem.

If that doesn't work.. shutting down and then booting up your Mac can also achieve the same thing..

(Note: Shut down and Boot Up.. not Restart as a Restart doesn't clear certain variables etc.. in your Mac)

Once the 1004 error is resolved... then you will be able to update 9.1.7 to 9.1.8.. I just helped a client do so literally an hour ago, over the phone.. and he updated without issue.

Failing all that.. or if you need to update urgently.. then deleting the LP9 app from your Applications folder and redownloading it and installing from the Purchased tab.. usually works too.. Just takes a lot longer..

All the 9.x versions were on the web as well as the app store.  Is there a web download of 10.0.1?

    Hi Mike,

    1) If you buy Logic Pro 9 via the App store.. several people (Including the OP for this thread) have stated they cannot use use the stand alone updates as it gives an error stating they must update via the Mac App Store Update tab... I haven't been able to confirm this because all of my LP9 installs originated from the Logic Studio 2.0 boxed set..  and not from the App Store.

    2) So far there is no stand alone 10.0.1 update... presumably because you can only purchase it via the Mac App Store and so you will only be able to update it via the Mac App Store Update tab... I don't expect there to be stand alone update installers for this very same reason but you never know. However, so far Apple haven't 'pushed' one up as far as i know/can tell.

Hey Art: thanks for taking the time to respond. I tried your suggestions and still no luck. I signed off the App Store and signed back in. Still got error 1004. Shutdown, Started up, went to the app store and same thing. Next I signed off, THEN shutdown, then started up and signed back into the app store. Still got error 1004.

Hope it's just a temporary problem as you suggest. Odd that someone else was able to do this today. I had the same problem yesterday when I tried as well. Also, doesn't it seem strange that no update is listed on the App Store updates page? As I said, it was there before Apple rolled out Logic X.

Mike, as I mentioned in the OP, the standalone installer wouldn't work for me.

    Hi Boyd,

I can confirm the update from 9.1.x to 9.1.8 still shows (or did at least until he updated) on my clients (Based in the UK)  update screen earlier today.. so..

One thing first to check.. You haven't moved or renamed your Logic Pro 9 app from it's default name and location under Applications? If you did so, put it back and rename it back to Logic Pro.app then try both the App store update routine and the stand alone update installer once more.

    If that doesn't work...

I suggest you contact Apple directly and see if they can assist you.. as it is unusual that one of the servers would have this error for so long. Normally it has only lasted about an hour in the past when I have come across the same problem myself.

Thanks again. Still having the same problem today, nothing has changed. I just used migration assistant to move everything from my old machine (2011 13" MacBook Air with 10.7.3) to the new machine (2013 11" MacBook Air with 10.8.4). Logic is really the only thing I'm having a problem with (except an old driver for my audio interface that required downloading a new version from Akai).

Logic is in the Applications folder and named Logic Pro.app

I finally got around to trying some recording last night and Logic 9.17 seems to work fine on the new machine, so I don't know that it's worth a lot of effort messing with this. But it certainly is odd. I'll try contact Apple but sort of doubt that will help.

Maybe I'll just delete Logic and see what happens when I try to download it again. That concerns me a bit though, because I fear I'll get the same error 1004 in the Purchased window at the app store. I suppose I can always restore it from my time machine backup though.

You can always just copy the Logic app to another drive and eject it, then if you delete it and the app store won't let you download again, just copy it back.

Again, I would contact Apple for assistance..  I have found them to be very useful in such situations when extra troubleshooting is concerned though be aware, you might have to wait until the escalate your issue to a higher tech support level./ Just be clear as to exactly what the issue is to the initial support personal and normally, once they realize it is not 'in their support notes' they will escalate it pretty quickly..

Otherwise deleting (or a more safe approach is to move it out of your Apps folder and rename it temporarily)  the app and then trying to download it again.. would probably prove to be an alternative solution...

Thanks again for trying to help!

I tried moving Logic out of the Applications folder and changing the name. I wasn't able to do this in the Finder, it just wanted to create an alias, so I used terminal (I'm an old unix hacker going way back ).

Logged out of the App Store and logged back in. But the App Store still thinks Logic is installed. When I go to the Purchases windows, it only offers the opportunity to update Logic, not to re-install. And of course the update button still gives me error 1004.

I will contact Apple support and see what they can do.

The fact you could not move and rename the Logic Pro app.. in Finder, may well demonstrate part of the reason you are having such issues as you should be able to do that very easily... and possibly reflects some kind of permissions issue...

Well I just assumed this was another "improvement" in 10.8. The same thing happens if I try to move anything from the Applications folder. It only wants to create an alias (or shortcut or whatever they're called). When you drag anything from the Applications folder, it's icon has an arrow added to it.

I have contacted Apple Support BTW and got an initial response right away, so the dialog has started there. Sorry for being cynical about that. I have been using Macs since 1985 (and Apple ][ since 1978) and am not sure that I've ever needed to contact support before!

Thanks again, I will update this thread if I find a resolution.

No.. you are right in as much as if you use Finder to simply drag and drop an app from the applications folder to somewhere else it does create a shortcut.. That's expected behaviour..

But what i was speaking about was 'moving' it out of the applications folder which requires you to copy the app to a different location first.. and then delete the original one in the Appplication folder..

Ah, I see.  Well I think that the unix mv command accomplished the same thing for me. It actually removed the file from the applications folder.

Yep.. This is why I still love and use terminal.. for stuff exactly like that...

I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion about what was and is supposed to happen in Finder...
