Q: MacKeeper & MacBook Pro

I recently came across discussions about MacKeeper that were very negative and recommends that it be removed from the laptop.  I just want to make sure this is important (and why) to remove.  I've been using it for over a year, and never had any problems, and in fact it helped me remove duplicates and clean up my machine (which I admit is an older version).  I need some advise before I go to the trouble to remove it.
