Hello there lesliec3136,

Check out this part of the article named iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702.

2. Check for app updates

Ensure that your apps are up to date:

  1. Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.
  2. When prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. App Store will then download and install the application updates.

Note: Some applications may require a Wi-Fi connection to update.

In order to update apps on your device through iTunes, the apps first have to be downloaded to the iTunes library. To download them to your iTunes library use this article:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

All the best,

Sterling
