Creating Birthday Invitations

Hi All,

I am new to OSX... Is IPhoto the best application to create Birthday Invitations on?

Is there another (free) app which would be better to use?

Sorry for the basic question but I have only had my MBP for 2 days and have not yet got in to the I Life apps.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

No. If you have some card stock that's 7" x 10" you can print it from iPhoto. One side will print first and then you have to turn it over quickly and insert to print the other side. I always mess it up as to which way to turn the card over and reinsert so do a test with some paper cut to 7 x 10. Be aware that some of the themes have a lot of color in the background and will use up a lot of ink. I've done one or two that way in testing out the process. Here in the states there are some suppliers that will have pre-scored 7x10 card stock available. If not where you are then you'll need to buy some good quality stock, the smoother the better for image quality, and cut to the size you want. Heavy stock smooth print paper, around 28l b in weight, would make a decent, lightweight card.

P.S. If the first print attempt prints like it's on the normal size paper, A4 or US letter, click on the Advanced button in the print window and change the Copies and Pages menu to Paper Handling. Then select the radio button for "Use doucment's paper size: 7 x 10. That should do it.

You might want to try iWork '06. The Pages application has a couple of built-in templates for invitations, and you can replace the default pictures with other pictures or simply throw in anything from your iPhoto library (it has a media browser!) or draw it yourself.

It's much easier than using Word or even AppleWorks although it lacks built in art. You can get that from anywhere though. What you can't get is the simplicity that Pages offers you. I believe it also can merge addresses from your Addressbook although I haven't used the feature.

Thanks for the reply Toad,

A couple of things...

1. When I look at the dimensions of the card (in the information panel of IPhoto) it says the card is 7'' x 5''. Is this different on yours?

2. In regards to "turn it over quickly", why don't you just print page 1 (front and back) and then turn the page over and then print page 2 (insides). This will save you having to quickly turning it over and inserting it the wrong way. Just a thought 🙂

I didn't have much luck in resizing the card tonight when I tried printing on slightly larger cards we bought. I think I am going to find 7'' x 5'' sixed cards somewhere?

Cheers.

Tanks for the tip Dave,

At this stage I would prefer to just use an application that I have rather than purchase something. However, IWorks 06 does look like it woudl do the job (I wastched the quicktime movies on the web).

I'll keep plugging away at IPhoto for awhile, it is only really the printing that I am getting stuck on, the card looks great on the screen 🙂

Cheers.
