Universal mail format to be able to import mailboxes/mail folders?

Is there a ‘universal’ mail format to ‘make’ mailboxes/local mail folders importable into Mac Mail? (I asked this of Emailchemy, too.)

Alternatively, can I import the messages into IMAP (and then I can file them from there) and if so, how? Do I need to do any kind of conversion?

All of the messages originated as some kind of Mac Mail.

Also, I’ve done a rebuild of the mailboxes and deleted the appropriate library data files beginning with the word ‘envelope’ numerous times.
