Bengining of the week, I realized my iMessage did not work, and I can't login back.
I tried all the suggestions from this forum but still can't resolve.
Finally, I realized that my 5 years Mac Pro its serial number does not show up in "About My Mac" and Terminal
Anyone can help me to restore this serial number without bringing it back to Apple Genius Bar?

Click About This Mac from your Apple () menu top left in your screen then click More Info.
The serial number should be noted there.

Open Terminal and type
ioreg -l | grep IOPlatformSerialNumber
to show up your serial number?
No. it does not,it only showing this
| "IOPlatformSerialNumber" = "System Serial#"
I tried to boot from 10.6 or 10.7 and even reinstall 10.8 ... all do not help
Then you'd better take it to authorize service center or Genius Bar. Seems they have "set serial number utility"

thank you, thats what I believe .... sigh ... as it is quite heavy, and would like to see if there is anything I can do to restore it ..

Yes i did, and I can see the seriel number on the back of my Mac Pro.
But I need iMessage to detect the serial number for me to sign in.

Mitch, Try going to the apple and Clicking on About this Mac, then More Info, and then in Hardware Overview look at the second up from the bottom and it should show the Serial Number (system) is this what your looking for?

If your mainboard was replaced, but the technician neglected to use the Serial Number Utility to install a new Serial number, it is believable that you could now have none.
It will take a trip to the Apple store or a service provider to have them install one.

the solution, as I said just above, is to return to the place that last serviced your Mac (or a more convenient Apple-Authorized Service Provider) and have a serial number installed.
If you use a different service provider, be prepared to demonstrate that you actually own the Mac you are presenting.
I bought it back to Apple Store, and they managed to reload the serial number to the machine ..
It just took less then 15 minutes
