Where do new busses get their numbers from?

When I create a new bus in the Environment mixer it will have a number that seems to be coming from the MIDI channel number of one of the software instrument tracks-is that correct?

Is it possible to change the number of an existing bus? or do I have to create all 64 busses and choose the number I want?

Won't Logic just force the number it wants to use if I have created all the bus objects? i.e. if I choose to number a bus 3, and logic sees the MIDI channel of the top most software track[or audio track] is different won't it just undo my choice?

Can this be done in Logic Pro X?

Thanks for the reply.

I find it works better for my workflow if I use the Environment mixer window in a second display screen and then I can move the busses and auxes around so I have them adjacent to each other and don't grab the wrong fader for trimming one group in a mix.

May I ask what your objection is to my way of life?

Hi

Bus (Environment) objects are a legacy item, that generally serve little additional purpose. I am struggling to think of a scenario where the use of Bus Objects in the Environment could be of value.

When using Sends, Output to a Bus, etc etc, Logic v8 and up will automatically create an Aux channel that 'listens' to that particular Bus.

When creating Multiple Output channels for Software instruments, Aux channels are also used.

It might be more helpful to think of a "Bus" as a pipe that you route a signal down, using Aux channels to "listen" to the other end of the (Bus) pipe. Any processing would be applied on the Aux (Return), rather than directly on the Bus.

Thanks CCTM but I find Goerge Schrwaz's idea to use the bus channel strip fader when mixing to lower the volume of a group while maintaing the integrity of all output faders at zero db works better for me. I read his article on the new score features, and his tip about a workflow system using the bus channel strips on the MacProVideo web site but it seems to have been repaced.

I just read Anker and Merton and they agree with you, I read Jay Ashers' book too but can't remember which he prefered.

It might be possible to create the bus channel strip in the Mixer under the Arrange page but I will have to look into that,it probably isn't possible to create a bus channel strip in that Mixer, that may be why Mr. Schwarz said to use the Environment mixer.

I believe we just have here two of the many methods of configuring Logic-one suits you and the other suits me,no problem.

But considering your better knowledge of Logic I was hoping you might know something else that would sovle my problem, maybe choosing the bus number in the Mixer under the Arrange is the way to get the same number for all three channel strips, since creating the bus channel strip in the Environment causes logic to give it a number but not the umber I need.

Many thanks again for taking the time to reply so in depth, cheers!

Nope... you can only make them in the Environment

Frankly, I would simply use Aux channels, but, as you say.. more than one (2 or more) way to do it.

I'll take a look later on

Thanks CCT, sorry to be so late in replying but I am tryig to figure out why everytime I re=open a project all the settings are changed-no overlap goes to overlap, ticks go to smart, interpretation is turned on[very unpleasant] even notes on a locked MIDI track are changed or completely missing.

I will wait for 10.02 and try the new Logic Pro X, surely it must work better than what I am getting from 9.1.8 now.
