Q: registering device does not have appropriate credentials

Every time I try and sign in to facetime it says "registering device does not have appropriate credentials".  Password is correct.  Not sure what the problem is.

    Greetings!

Below is the fix for Snow Leopard (10.6.8). It looks like it's going to work with later versions of OS X as well.

It took me awhile to figure this one out. The problem has to do with the lack of "com.apple.facetime: registration" entry in the "login" Keychain of a FaceTime-troubled account, which is likely the administrator account. Standard accounts work fine.

    1) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts (unlock it in the lower left corner, if needed)  and create a new administrator account on the Mac in question.

--- It is imperative to have at least one administrator account on OS X! --

    2) Click on "Login Options" set "Automatic login" to Off.

    3) Log out of all accounts (all users) and log in into a newly created (administrator-privileged) account.

    4) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts, select the FaceTime-troubled account/user, the one in which "registering device does not have appropriate credentials" and remove a check mark next to "Allow user to administer this computer".

    5) Press OK to confirm that "changes will take effect after a computer restart". So - reboot your mac.

    6) Now - log in into the FaceTime-troubled account/user, launch FaceTime, sign in with your apple id and make a call. It has to ring a few times... no need to actually speak with somebody. The "registration" item is now created in the Keychain "login". Quit out of FaceTime.

    7) Reboot - so "login" Keychain retains the registration for FaceTime (imagent specifically).

    8) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts and put the check mark back to "Allow user to administer this computer" in the account/user you have removed it from (FaceTime-troubled account/user).

    9) Do step 5 (so the change takes effect).

    10) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts and delete the account you created in step 1. Restore Automatic login as well, if needed.

    I hope this  helps.

    All the best,

    A:>

Thank you.  This fix actually worked and I've been able to use facetime for the first time in a year.  Apple has completely failed to address this.

Help! I used to be able to use facetime on my Macbook, and now I am getting this error ""registering device does not have appropriate credentials." I followed LEDOCOL's instructions but it didn't get me anywhere.

Running 10.6.8 with Facetime 1.0.3 and following LEDOCOL's instructions didn't seem to work.  Apple has Facetime 1.0.4 for purchase on the App store but not sure if that will solve the problem.  Anyone having Facetime log in successfull?

    Thanks

Upgrading to Facetime 1.0.4 -- which claims to fix the problem -- and now do not get the credentials msg, but no luck logging into Facetime. (Have not tried the LEDOCOL trick.)

I upgraded to 1.0.4 and don't get the credential message any more but I can't sign in. Tells me to check my network connection and make sure I'm online which I do.

Please let me know if you solve this problem. You can email me at paparaz@telus.net. Thanks. Paul

I was getting the same registering device message with 1.0.3 on 10.6.8.  I upgraded to 1.0.5 and still Facetime wouldn't work.  Ran through the LEDOCOL trick and now can access Facetime.  Have used it yet to know how well it works, but at least I can log into it now.

    Thanks

I HAVE THE SOLUTION!!! Its a few second solution too

Open up terminal and type the following command:

    killall imagent

Then Restart facetime, iMessages, or the affected program (this can happen in other programs besides facetime) and it should all work fine

Thanks for that - this worked for me!

even though Terminal said that 'there were no such processes which belonged to me'

launched Facetime right after and logged in successfully.

Great instructions and perfect fix, just in time for me when my college student son left to study abroad.  Thank you!
