Im trying to install a witeless hp printer to my mac os x. But it keeps saying its not compatible. It has to be max os x 10.6 or 10.7, I thought I was suppose to get free updates or automatic updates? Please help Im so lost!

That is an upgrade, not an update. Updates are free but you must pay for an upgrade.
Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?
Example. With v10.6 installed, an update would be v10.6.7 to v10.6.8
And upgrade would be to go from v10.6 Snow Leopard to v10.7 Lion and so on.
