Q: Facetime HD Camera not working

I have a new MBP 2012 13 inch, and the facetime HD built in camera isn't working at all. When I try to open photobooth or any other application that uses it I get no response, on photobooth its a black screen with a spinning wheel and facetime doesn't open at all. It is recognized in my system information, but it just doesn't turn on, no green light or anything.

Any help would be appreciated!

It sounds to me as if your system software may be damaged.

    • Applying the Combo update takes less time than reinstalling all the OS X software, and it sometimes corrects problems like yours.

Therefore,  I suggest you apply the latest (currently, 10.8.4) Combo update:  OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo) to see if that corrects your trouble.

I suggest you restart Mac first and repair permissions before and after applying the Combo Update.

    • If the Combo Update does not help, you may need to Restore your computer’s software.

Be sure to have a current backup of your important files before you restore or reinstall

    OS X.

    • If you still have trouble, one of the suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 will get it working.

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  The linked info and troubleshooting also applies to your Mac's built-in FTHD camera.)
