If I buy a mac in USA, will the warranty be valid in India ?

I will be in USA for a few days in San Francisco. If I buy the new macbook air from an apple store, will the warranty be still valid when I return to India ?

Yes > Apple - One Year Limited Warranty - Worldwide

Thanks Carolyn. I work as a Professor in Medical College, Kolkata, India. If I show my identity card and provide a copy of my payslip, will I get an education discount ?

This being a user to user community, Mac users helping one another, we have no way of knowing exactly what the Apple Store policy will be for you for an education discount.

You can definitely ask any of the Apple Store employees.

The two closest Apple Stores to downtown San Francisco are on Chestnut Street and One Stockton Street.
