factory reset my macbook air

Hi All

I'm new to mac computers, have been given my parent's macbook air and want to reset it to the beginning to erase everything on there/start again. I've spent hours trying to take the stuff off but this seems the easier option - any suggestions/advice on the easiest way to do this?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

There's a lock on the macbook air and I have this number that I pulled up. C024262OHB8FY58A2A9582A577573FOD

Did they first take off the locator, then sign out of icloud? and then lastly to reset/erase all content and settings?

You do it in that order (or they do it in that order)
