Q: Adjust output power, Time Capsule

Hello!

I’m almost ready to purchase the Time capsule, but one question needs to be answered.
Earlier, it was possible to adjust the transmit power using the airport tool from a MAC and/or IOS.
To my knowledge, this function is not possible with the latest version of the Airport tool

I have also read somewhere that adjusting the output power IS possible with the Airport tool for Windows. Can someone please confirm that this is possible?
Adjusting the output power is a must for us.

Thanks and regards,
Ole

Adjusting the output power is not possible with the version(s) of AirPort Utility that must be used to set up and configure the new Time Capsule.

Even though the setting might have appeared in older versions of AirPort Utility, if you try to make the change using an older version and apply it to the Time Capsule, the setting will not "stick" on the new Time Capsule.

Many thanks for your reply Bob

If I understand you correctly, then it is not possible to configure the Time capsule on the Windows platform.

In addition; Apple, are you listening to this? Why remove such features in the new version of the AirPort utility?

It does not make sense at all...

I will certainly not have such products in my environment; there is no need to transmit with 100% power when 33 or 50% is enough in smaller environments...

    Regards,
    Ole

then it is not possible to configure the Time capsule on the Windows platform.

Not on an Apple platform either unless you are using the Lion or Mountain Lion operating system.....or an iPad or iPhone with an updated copy of AirPort Utility. Even then, you cannot adjust the Transmit Power.

In addition; Apple, are you listening to this?

It is extremely unlikely that anyone from Apple will ever see your post. Even they might....they will not reply here. You might want to provide feedback directly to Apple here:

Hopefully, Apple will listen. It is unfortunate that so many useful settings have been removed from AirPort Utility.

    Just a (final) word:

This is what I sent to Apple:

Please add more options in the advanced setting in the airport utility, like the possibility to adjust the transmit power. Best to add separately adjustment for the 2,4GHz and the 5GHZ band since the later has less coverage and may need a higher transmit power settings.

From the former Airport utility user guide:

"Security for AirPort Networks in Businesses and Classrooms:

Businesses and schools need to restrict network communications to authorized users
and keep data safe from prying eyes. To meet this need, Apple wireless devices and
software provide a robust suite of security mechanisms. Use AirPort Utility to set up
    these advanced security features.

    Transmitter Power Control:
Because radio waves travel in all directions, they can extend outside the confines of a
specific building. The Transmit Power setting in AirPort Utility lets you adjust the
transmission range of your device’s network. Only users within the network vicinity
    have access to the network".

I think that Apple don't care much about security when they now has removed the possibility to adjust the transmitter power as well as other advanced settings.

And yes, I have no illusion that they will listen to me...

    Ole

    Hello Bob,

Is the situation still the same? I was thinking of getting an Extreme for the bedroom, but I am concerned about the high power output near to where I will be sleeping. If its not possible to control the transmit power I may buy a second hand previous generation Extreme as it looks like it is 2/3rd the power.

    Regards

It would be much better to buy a new AirPort and then locate it further from your bedroom if you are concerned about radio waves.  The older AirPort Extreme would only run at about a third to half of the network speed that the old AirPort Extreme would. It would be shame to lose so much speed on your network unless it was absolutely necessary.

Sorry, Typo.  The sentence that reads......

The older AirPort Extreme would only run at about a third to half of the network speed that the old AirPort Extreme would.

    Should read.......

The older AirPort Extreme would only run at about a third to half of the network speed that the new AirPort Extreme would.

    Thanks Bob,

But I was after both the router functionality and WiFi, so having the unit outside won't help. My internet is slow here so I will probably go for the older unit. I did feedback to Apple but Olebandole did 2 years ago, so I don't hold out much hope.
