"Cannot get mail" "The connection to the server failed" Contacts have disappeared

When I got my iPhone I saved my contacts from my Blackberry to a Gmail account and restored them on to it.

Now my email is saying "Cannot get mail", "The connection to the server failed" and my contacts have all disappeared.

Does anyone know if the two are linked? Just the email hasn't worked properly for a week or so and my contacts have only disappeared this morning.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello, Chris.

The article below will help you troubleshoot this issue.

iOS: Gmail account will not connect to Gmail server

I would recommend deleting the email account, processing the above steps and adding the account back via the preset Gmail option. This will bring mail, calendar and note functionality only at this time. To enable contact syncing with Gmail, see the article below.
